How to brew Moccamaster / Batch Brew

How-to guide
Gear needed
- Moccamaster brewer (any model)
- Moccamaster paper filter (#4 or basket)
- Digital scale
- Grinder (medium)
- Freshly roasted coffee
- Filtered water
Step-by-step
1. Fill the water tank
Add cold filtered water to the reservoir. The Moccamaster will heat it to the optimal 92-96°C automatically.
2. Insert filter and rinse
Place the paper filter in the brew basket and rinse with hot water for a clean cup. Discard the rinse water.
3. Add coffee
Add 60g of medium-ground coffee (similar to coarse sand) for a 1L brew. Level the bed gently.
4. Brew
Switch on the Moccamaster. It will pulse hot water over the bed for an even extraction. Total time is around 6 minutes for a full carafe.
5. Serve
The thermal carafe (or hot plate) keeps your coffee at the right temperature. Swirl the carafe before pouring to mix any stratification.
Troubleshooting
- Bitter coffee: Coarsen the grind slightly.
- Weak coffee: Use a finer grind or increase dose.
- Uneven extraction: Make sure the bed is level and use the correct filter size.
- Channeling: Try a coarser, more uniform grind from a quality burr grinder.

Tips
- Use medium grind — too fine causes bitterness, too coarse weak.
- Always rinse the filter for a cleaner cup.
- Descale every 100 brews with a Moccamaster-approved descaler.
- Use filtered water — it protects the heating element and tastes better.
- The thermal carafe keeps coffee fresh for hours without a hot plate.
