3-way solenoid valve

An electromechanical valve that directs water from the pump to the group during extraction, then releases puck pressure to the drip tray when the shot ends.

Category: Espresso Machine — Groups & Brew Path

An electronically operated valve in the group head that directs water three ways: from the pump to the group during brewing, blocked off when idle, and out through the discharge line after the shot ends to release pressure from the puck.

Why it matters — The 3-way solenoid is what gives a clean shot finish — no dripping, no soggy pucks, no pressure waiting to escape when you unlock the portafilter. It also enables backflushing for routine cleaning.

Good to know

  • The solenoid gums up with coffee oils over time, causing dripping or slow valve release. A weekly detergent backflush prevents most issues.
  • A failed solenoid is one of the most common espresso machine repairs and is usually inexpensive to fix.
