Boiler material (copper, stainless steel, brass)
The metal the boiler is built from. Copper is traditional and thermally efficient; stainless steel is inert and doesn't need descaling as often; brass is used for heat exchangers and some commercial boilers.
Category: Boilers & Heating
The three common materials for espresso machine boilers. Copper conducts heat fastest and is traditional in Italian commercial machines. Stainless steel resists corrosion and scaling, common in modern prosumer and commercial machines. Brass sits between the two and is often used for smaller boilers and components.
Why it matters — Boiler material affects heat-up time, thermal stability, longevity, and water taste. Stainless is the modern standard for most home use because it tolerates hard water far better than copper.
Good to know
- Copper boilers need disciplined descaling in hard water areas — scale plus copper plus heat is the recipe for pinhole leaks years down the line.
- Stainless steel boilers are heavier and slightly slower to heat than copper, but practically maintenance-free.
