Bottomless (naked) portafilter
A portafilter with the spouts and bottom removed, exposing the basket and the underside of the puck during extraction.
Category: Espresso Machine — Groups & Brew Path
A portafilter with no spouts — just the basket holder, exposing the bottom of the basket so you can see the shot extract directly.
Why it matters — A bottomless portafilter is the single best diagnostic tool for home espresso. You can see channelling, side-spray, uneven extraction, and any puck-prep problem instantly.
Good to know
- Most issues — especially channelling — are invisible with a spouted portafilter and obvious with a bottomless one.
- Once you've dialled in the prep with a bottomless, you can switch back to a spouted portafilter for daily use if you prefer the look.
