Burr alignment
Making sure the two burrs are perfectly parallel to each other.
Category: Grinders — Burrs & Build
The geometry of the two burrs in relation to each other. Properly aligned burrs are perfectly parallel; misaligned burrs sit at a slight angle, with one side closer than the other.
Why it matters — Misalignment produces a wider, messier particle distribution — more boulders on one side, more fines on the other — which collapses extraction consistency. Aligning a grinder typically improves cup clarity noticeably.
Good to know
- Most prosumer grinders (Niche, Eureka, DF64) can be DIY aligned using marker-pen or shim-paper methods. Plenty of video guides exist.
- Alignment slips over time, especially after burr swaps. Worth checking annually.
