Cloth filter
A reusable fabric filter used on siphons and some pour-overs.
Category: Brew Methods — Non-Espresso
A reusable fabric filter — usually cotton or hemp — used on siphons (Hario syphon, Yama) and some pour-over brewers (the Nel drip is a classic example).
Why it matters — Cloth filters sit between paper and metal in terms of what they hold back. They keep most of the fines but let through more oils than paper, producing a cup with more body than pour-over and more clarity than French press.
Good to know
- Cloth filters need careful storage between uses — rinse thoroughly, then keep in water (in the fridge) or fully dry. Half-dried cloth turns rancid quickly.
- Replace every 2–4 months of regular use; long before that if the cloth smells.
