Dechunker (bean-density declumper)

A pop-up screen or sieve that mechanically breaks grind clumps. Sometimes integrated into dosing cups.

Category: Accessories & Barista Tools

A pop-up screen or sieve that mechanically breaks up grind clumps as the coffee drops into the basket or dosing cup. Some are integrated into dosing cups; others sit on top of the basket like a funnel with a mesh insert.

Why it matters — Static and oils make modern grinders clump, especially with light roasts. Clumps mean uneven puck density, which means water finds the easy path through and channels. A dechunker breaks them up before they settle.

Good to know

  • A dechunker complements WDT but doesn't replace it — WDT stirs the grounds in place, a dechunker breaks them as they fall.
  • Mesh size matters: too fine and grounds back up; too coarse and clumps slip through.
