Direct drive vs belt drive
The burr carrier is either attached directly to the motor shaft (direct drive) or connected via a belt (belt drive).
Category: Grinders — Burrs & Build
Two ways to transfer motor power to the burrs. Direct drive attaches the burr carrier directly to the motor shaft. Belt drive connects them through a toothed or smooth belt and pulleys.
Why it matters — Direct drive is simpler, lower-maintenance, and quieter. Belt drive (used in some EK43-style grinders and the original Mythos) allows the burrs to spin slower than the motor's native speed — useful for big burrs that need low RPM to avoid heat.
Good to know
- Direct drive dominates home and most café espresso grinders.
- Belt drive is more common in filter / batch grinders where larger burrs and lower speeds are desirable.
