Drip tray
The removable basin under the group and steam wand that catches drips, purges and rinse water — usually with a grate on top and either a drain hose out the back or a full-tray indicator.
Category: Water System
The catch tray that sits below the group head, the steam wand, and the hot water tap — collecting any water, milk, or grounds that fall during use. Slides out from the front of most machines for emptying.
Why it matters — The drip tray is the most-handled part of an espresso machine. Empty it daily — standing water grows bacteria, attracts pests, and starts to smell within a day or two.
Good to know
- Some drip trays have a drain hose connection at the back for direct plumbing — common on commercial machines.
- Stainless steel trays clean faster than chrome or painted ones.
