Flat burr
Two horizontally mounted, parallel-faced burrs that grind coffee between their flat cutting surfaces as beans enter from the centre.
Category: Grinders — Burrs & Build
A grinder burr design with two flat parallel discs — one stationary, one rotating — cutting beans between them as they pass radially outward. Discharged from the outer edge.
Why it matters — Flat burrs tend to produce a tighter, more unimodal particle distribution — most particles close to the target size — which translates to clearer, cleaner espresso and exceptional filter coffee.
Good to know
- The Mahlkönig EK43, Ceado E37, and Eureka Mignon are classic flat burr grinders.
- Flat burrs run hotter than conicals of the same size, which is why high-end flat burr grinders use slow RPM motors to minimise heat.
