Flow control device (FCD, flow profiler)
A needle-valve mounted in the group head that lets the barista throttle water flow during a shot — enables flow profiling on E61 and lever machines.
Category: Espresso Machine — Groups & Brew Path
An aftermarket or built-in valve that lets the barista manually restrict flow at the group during a shot — essentially turning a fixed-pressure machine into a flow-profiling one. Popular as an upgrade for E61 machines.
Why it matters — Flow control gives you a new variable to manipulate during the shot. Lower flow during pre-infusion can reduce channelling and extend extraction; varying flow during the shot can shape the cup character.
Good to know
- Aftermarket FCDs are available for most E61 machines and install in about 30 minutes.
- Use takes practice — most users underuse the FCD initially and over-restrict early. Pull lots of shots learning what changes when.
