French press (plunger)
An immersion brewer with a metal mesh plunger that separates grounds from coffee.
Category: Brew Methods — Non-Espresso
A cylindrical brewer with a fine metal mesh attached to a plunger. Coffee and water steep together, then the plunger pushes the grounds to the bottom and you pour off the brew.
Why it matters — One of the simplest and most forgiving brewing methods. Full immersion, metal filter — the result is a heavy-bodied cup with all the coffee oils and some fine sediment.
Good to know
- Standard recipe: 60 g coffee per litre of water, 4 minutes steep, gentle plunge.
- Pre-warming the press with hot water before brewing helps maintain temperature — glass press carafes lose heat fast.
