Gasket replacement
Replacing the rubber portafilter gasket — a 10-minute job on most machines.
Category: Maintenance & Servicing
The process of replacing the portafilter gasket (also called the group gasket) — the rubber or silicone ring that seals the portafilter against the group head during brewing. Usually a 5–15 minute job.
Why it matters — The gasket is the single most common espresso machine service part. Gaskets harden and compress over 6–12 months, eventually leaking around the portafilter. Replacing one can transform a machine that feels "tired."
Good to know
- Silicone gaskets last 2–3× longer than rubber and are worth the small extra cost.
- If the old gasket is stuck, a gasket removal tool or a wood/plastic pick avoids gouging the group seat.
