Grate

The slotted top plate on the drip tray that supports cups under the group. Usually stainless steel; on some commercial machines it can be perforated, slatted, or rubber-coated.

Category: Water System

The perforated metal plate that sits on top of the drip tray, providing a flat surface for cups and portafilters while letting water drip through.

Why it matters — The grate is the visible top surface of the drip tray. A good grate stays flat, doesn't rattle when the portafilter sits on it, and resists corrosion from constant water exposure.

Good to know

  • Stainless steel grates last longer than chrome-plated steel grates, which can rust at the cut edges.
  • Wash daily — coffee oils and milk residue build up underneath the grate fast.
