Grind by time

An on-demand grinder mode where the motor runs for a programmed duration (e.g. 6.2 seconds) to deliver a dose. Common on prosumer and commercial grinders without integrated scales.

Why it matters — Grind-by-time is simple and fast, but inaccurate. Bean density, humidity, and burr wear all change how much coffee drops in a given time — meaning the same time setting produces different doses day to day.

Good to know

• Expect ±0.3–0.5 g of variation day to day with grind-by-time.
• Use a scale on the portafilter as a check, even with grind-by-time — adjust the time setting as needed.
