Grinder burr replacement
Fitting new burrs to your grinder — typically every 500–1000kg of coffee for steel burrs.
Category: Maintenance & Servicing
The process of removing worn burrs from a grinder and installing fresh ones. Worn burrs produce a wider grind distribution, more boulders, more fines, and noticeably worse cup quality.
Why it matters — Burrs have a working life — typically 500–1000 kg of coffee for steel flat burrs, longer for conical or coated burrs. Replacing them at the right time restores grind quality and shot consistency.
Good to know
- Signs of worn burrs: shots getting faster at the same grind setting, more spritzing on a bottomless portafilter, increased fines, dulled flavour clarity.
- After a burr swap, recalibrate the zero point and season the new burrs with 5–10 kg of coffee before expecting normal behaviour.
