Gusher
A shot that runs far too fast — pouring in under 15 seconds at 1:2 ratio, usually from too-coarse grind or a severely channelled puck.
Category: Extraction — Workflow & Technique
A shot that runs far too fast — pouring in under 15 seconds at a 1:2 ratio. Often comes with no crema, watery flow, and a hollow flavour.
Why it matters — Indicates a major puck integrity problem. Usually grind too coarse, dose too low, or severely channelled puck (often from a bad tamp or an unmaintained basket).
Good to know
- A bottomless portafilter will show you immediately whether the gusher is from grind, dose, or channelling.
- Don't fix a gusher only by grinding finer — check the dose and puck prep first; otherwise you'll keep chasing the problem.
