Hybrid (ghost) burrs

A newer burr geometry (pioneered by SSP and Lagom) that combines aspects of both flat and conical designs, often marketed as producing "high clarity" or "sweet" cups.

Category: Grinders — Burrs & Build

A modern burr geometry that combines characteristics of flat and conical burrs — sometimes called "ghost burrs" because the resulting particle distribution sits between the two. Brands include SSP, Lagom, and others.

Why it matters — Hybrid burrs let manufacturers tune grind character beyond the traditional flat-vs-conical choice. Different hybrid geometries produce different cup profiles — clarity-led, body-led, or balanced.

Good to know

  • SSP burrs (Shurakain in Korea) are the best-known hybrid burrs — popular as aftermarket upgrades for Mythos, Niche, EK43, and others.
  • Burr swap is a major project — alignment matters and seasoning takes 5–10 kg of coffee. Worth it for serious users; overkill for casual ones.
