Levelling tool (distribution tool)
A spinner or paddle-style tool that rotates on top of the grounds to flatten the bed before tamping.
Category: Extraction — Workflow & Technique
A puck-prep tool that flattens the surface of the grounds before tamping — typically a spinning disc with angled blades that shaves and distributes the bed evenly. Brands include OCD, Pesado, and many others.
Why it matters — A flat bed lets water hit the puck uniformly during tamping and brewing. Levelling tools speed up prep and remove the variability of hand-levelling.
Good to know
- A leveller doesn't break clumps — pair it with a WDT tool for the full puck-prep workflow.
- Adjust the leveller depth so the blades just kiss the surface of the grounds, not dig into the basket bed.
