A reusable fine-mesh metal filter — typically stainless steel — used in place of paper. Fits common pour-over brewers (V60, Kalita) or the AeroPress.
Why it matters — Metal filters let coffee oils and very fine particles through, producing a cup with more body and a heavier mouthfeel than paper. It's a middle ground between paper pour-over (very clean) and French press (full body, lots of sediment).
Good to know
- Clean immediately after brewing — dried oils are hard to remove later. A weekly soak in a coffee detergent (Cafiza, Puly Caff) keeps the mesh open.
- Some metal filters are too fine for coarse French press grinds — match the filter mesh to the brew method.
