Portafilter spring (basket retaining clip)

The C-shaped wire clip inside the portafilter that grips the basket and stops it falling out when you knock the puck.

Category: Espresso Machine — Groups & Brew Path

The small wire spring clip inside the portafilter head that holds the basket in place. Allows the basket to be removed for cleaning but stops it falling out during normal use.

Why it matters — A worn or missing portafilter spring lets the basket slip during a shot, knock askew when locking in, or fall out when emptying. Cheap, easy to replace, easy to overlook.

Good to know

  • Springs lose tension over time. If your basket feels loose in the portafilter, swap the spring before assuming the basket is at fault.
  • Keep a couple of spare springs in your toolkit — they're inexpensive and a missing one can sideline the machine.
