Puck screen
A thin metal mesh disc (usually 58mm, 0.2–1.7mm thick) placed on top of the tamped puck.
Category: Extraction — Workflow & Technique
A thin perforated metal disc placed on top of the puck before locking in the portafilter. Distributes water evenly across the puck surface and keeps the shower screen cleaner.
Why it matters — Puck screens reduce direct water impact on the puck, prevent the dispersion plate from pressing into the grounds during locking, and slow the rate of shower-screen oil buildup.
Good to know
- Most puck screens are 1.5 mm thick — thin enough not to affect dose capacity meaningfully.
- Rinse the screen between shots; clean weekly with a Cafiza soak alongside the rest of the puck-prep tools.
