Purge (grinder)
Running a small amount of coffee through the grinder to clear residual grounds before dosing fresh beans.
Category: Grinders — Adjustment & Dosing
Running a small amount of coffee through the grinder to clear residual grounds left from the previous use. Done when switching beans, after a long idle period, or as a daily warm-up.
Why it matters — Retained grounds from yesterday's coffee — sometimes a different bean entirely — contaminate today's dose. A short purge clears the chute and gives you a true representation of the current bean.
Good to know
- 2–5 grams is a typical purge dose.
- Modern low-retention grinders (Niche Zero, DF64, Lagom Mini) need less purging than traditional commercial grinders with long chutes.
