Remineralisation
Adding minerals back to water that has been too heavily filtered (e.g., RO water).
Category: Water Quality & Filtration
The process of adding minerals back to water that has been over-stripped by reverse osmosis or aggressive filtration. Done with mineral cartridges, drip-in sachets, or pre-mixed concentrate.
Why it matters — Pure water (RO output) tastes flat and won't extract coffee well — there's nothing in the water to dissolve coffee compounds. Adding back ideal minerals brings the water into the SCA target range for brewing.
Good to know
- Third Wave Water sachets are a popular home approach — add one sachet to a litre of RO water.
- Café setups usually use in-line remineralisation cartridges fitted downstream of the RO unit.
