Removable brew group (ZBG)
A self-contained brewing unit — used in fully automatic bean-to-cup machines like Jura, Saeco, DeLonghi Magnifica and Miele — that can be slid out for cleaning and descaling.
Category: Espresso Machine — Groups & Brew Path
The removable brewing unit used on superautomatic (bean-to-cup) espresso machines — typically Jura, Saeco, Philips, and others. ZBG (Zentrale Bruh Gruppe) is the engineering term for these units.
Why it matters — The ZBG is the heart of a bean-to-cup machine. It dispenses grounds, tamps, brews, then ejects the puck — all automatically. ZBG service and replacement is the single most important factor in bean-to-cup machine longevity.
Good to know
- Most ZBGs are user-removable for cleaning — pop out weekly, rinse under warm water, dry, replace.
- ZBGs eventually wear out and need full replacement (typically 5–10 years on home machines, sooner on heavily used office machines).
