Reservoir (tank)
The removable cold-water tank on a non-plumbed espresso machine. Feeds the pump on demand and includes a low-water sensor so the machine stops before running dry.

The internal water container on a non-plumbed espresso machine — typically 1–4 L on a home machine, larger on commercial models. Filled manually; usually accessible from the top or side of the machine.
Why it matters — Tank operation is simpler than plumbing in — no installation, no inspections, no concerns about legal compliance. Trade-off is refilling, no line pressure pre-infusion, and a finite shot count between refills.
Good to know
- Always use filtered water — even small amounts of unfiltered water accumulate scale over time.
- Check the tank weekly for buildup or biofilm and rinse with hot water and a mild detergent if needed.
