Ridged vs ridgeless baskets
Most baskets have a pressed ridge near the top that engages with the portafilter's retaining spring. Ridgeless baskets (used with E61 portafilters fitted with a different spring) sit flush.

Two basket designs. Ridged baskets have a groove around the outside that engages with the portafilter spring clip, securing the basket. Ridgeless baskets are smooth-walled and held by friction or by a separate retaining ring.
Why it matters — Ridged baskets are more secure and easier to swap; ridgeless baskets are popular in competition because the smooth walls produce a marginally cleaner puck release. Most home and café use defaults to ridged.
Good to know
- Ridged baskets stay in place during portafilter knock-out; ridgeless can pop out if knocked too hard.
- A few competition baristas favour ridgeless for the cleaner extraction visuals, but the difference is mostly aesthetic.
