The date a coffee came out of the roaster, usually printed on the bag.
Why it matters — Coffee changes flavour quickly after roasting. Under a week off roast, espresso shots bloom aggressively and taste sharp. Around 10–21 days off roast, most coffees are at their best for espresso. Past 6 weeks, coffees lose aromatic intensity and the cup goes flat.
Good to know
- Always buy coffee with a roast date printed. "Best before" dates 12 months out are a warning sign — that bag was sealed when fresh and won't be by the time you open it.
- Filter coffees often hold up longer than espresso — 4–6 weeks for filter is normal.
