Rotary Pump
Quiet, continuous-pressure pump driven by a separate motor — standard on commercial machines and high-end prosumers.
Category: Pumps & Pressure
A pump that uses a rotating shaft with sliding vanes to move water at constant volume per rotation. Smooth, quiet, durable, and the standard pump in commercial and high-end prosumer espresso machines.
Why it matters — Rotary pumps deliver smooth, pulse-free pressure, run quietly, and last 10+ years with periodic service. The trade-off is cost and size — they're bigger and more expensive than vibration pumps.
Good to know
- Common brands: Procon, Fluid-O-Tech. Rebuild kits are widely available.
- Rotary pumps must be plumbed (or have a positive-pressure tank supply) — they can't suck water from a reservoir without help. Adding a small "feed pump" between tank and rotary pump is one workaround.
