Single basket / double basket / triple basket

Filter baskets sized for different dose ranges. Single baskets hold 7–10 g, double baskets hold 16–22 g, triple baskets hold 21–24 g. The basket determines how much coffee fits and how a shot extracts.

Why it matters — Match the basket to your dose. A single in a double basket sits too low and channels; a double overflows a single basket. Most modern specialty espresso is pulled in a double basket.

Good to know

• Single baskets are increasingly rare in specialty cafés — most pull a double for the milk drinks and a separate small ratio (1:1 ristretto) for a short black.
• VST and IMS make precision baskets in each capacity — choose based on your typical dose.
