Soupy / watery puck
The puck doesn't knock out as a solid cake — comes out as slurry.
Category: Common Faults & Symptoms
The puck knocks out as a wet slurry rather than a firm dry cake. Common on modern machines.
Why it matters — Usually not a problem. On any machine with a 3-way valve (most modern espresso machines), the valve releases pressure but not all the moisture, leaving a wet puck. This is normal — it doesn't mean the shot was bad.
Good to know
- Don't chase a "dry puck" as a quality indicator. Taste matters; puck firmness doesn't.
- If the puck is soupy and the shot is channelling or tasting weak, address the puck prep — not the puck firmness directly.
