Stepless (micrometric) adjustment
A grind adjustment that varies continuously with no fixed increments.
Category: Grinders — Adjustment & Dosing
A grind adjustment system with no fixed click-stops — the user can set the burr gap to any position on a continuous scale. Contrasts with stepped adjustment, which has fixed increments.
Why it matters — Stepless adjustment lets you dial in to the exact grind your espresso needs, not just the next nearest preset. Critical for fine-tuning at the edge of the espresso range, where a half-step difference matters.
Good to know
- Stepless grinders need a clear reference mark (often a paint dot) so you can return to a known setting.
- Common on prosumer espresso grinders (Eureka Mignon, Mazzer Mini, Niche Zero). Filter grinders are often stepped because the precision matters less for pour-over.
