Tamping mat

A rubber or silicone mat that sits on the bench under the portafilter while tamping, cushioning the base and protecting the bench surface. Most have a raised edge that holds the portafilter steady during the tamp.

Why it matters — Without a mat, you're either denting the bench, chipping the tamper base, or both. A mat costs very little and prevents both problems.

Good to know

• Look for a mat with a non-slip underside — they migrate during a busy shift otherwise.
• Wash regularly — coffee oils accumulate underneath and on the rim.
