Tap / Steam Valve Assembly
The whole knob, stem, seal and seat assembly behind a steam or hot-water tap — drips and stiff knobs come from worn seats and o-rings inside.
Category: Steam & Hot Water
The valve, lever, and seals that open and close the steam (or hot water) path. Found at the base of the steam wand. Different designs include joystick taps, lever taps, knob taps, and ball-joint taps.
Why it matters — The steam valve is the most-used mechanical component on an espresso machine — hundreds or thousands of cycles a year. Quality matters; cheap valves leak, stick, or fail within a couple of years.
Good to know
- Joystick (lever) taps are easier to operate one-handed than rotary knobs — common on better prosumer machines.
- A leaking steam valve usually means a worn internal seal — inexpensive to replace, with the wand removed from the machine.
