Vibration Pump

Compact, inexpensive electromagnetic pump that pulses water at 50 Hz — standard on home and entry-level machines.

Category: Pumps & Pressure

A solenoid-driven pump using a magnetically actuated piston that vibrates 50–60 times per second to move water. Compact, inexpensive, and the standard pump in entry- to mid-level home espresso machines.

Why it matters — Vibration pumps deliver real espresso pressure (9 bar) in a small footprint and at low cost — which is why they dominate home machines. The trade-off is noise (audible buzz) and shorter service life (3–7 years typical).

Good to know

  • Common brand: Ulka (the standard in Italian home machines). Replacement is straightforward and inexpensive.
  • Vibration pumps work fine but feel different from rotary pumps — pulsing flow vs smooth flow. Most users don't notice once dialled in.
